Tessa is our resident tortoise who came here originally five years ago as a companion to our male, Thomas tortoise. Three years ago Thomas died which did not unduly worry Tessa as she is a rather independent character who was not very fond of him anyway! Tessa came from a zoo who were not keeping their reptiles up to standard and were asked to dispose of them. We have no idea therefore how old she is but put her somewhere in her thirties. Tessa’s claim to fame is that she once appeared with John Barrowman on his show Tonight’s The Night! Tessa is now something of a miracle having escaped at the beginning of the winter 2012 and disappeared. We did not think for one moment she would survive the cold of the winter 2012/13 so imagine our delight and surprise when a lady out walking in April 2013 called to the staff to say there was a tortoise beside the telegraph pole at the bottom of our drive! Tortoises do not have a homing instinct so the second miracle was that she was spotted coming out of hibernation before having time to wander off in any direction.
