Nutmeg arrived here in September 2012, he is actually a stallion but he is also in the region of being thirty years old and has lost any ideas of being amorous though he loves being part of an all female herd!!

He is a miniature shetland and small even for a miniature, some of our goats are bigger than he is!  Nutmeg lost his companion of some years and we were asked to take him on to stop him being lonely but also because his family were moving.  He was in appalling condition when we collected him, thin and covered in lice.  He had suspicious bulges at the sides of his mouth and the vet was called in to examine them, the problems in there were so bad the vet felt unable to cope, power tools were needed to sort everything out.  Our Equine Dental Technician Mark Thorne was called and, bless him, although he is a very busy man he made the time to call in the very next day.  The vet was here to tranquilise Nutmeg and stayed which was just as well because it took an hour and a half for Mark to make good his mouth, one of Nutmeg’s upper molars had actually grown into his bottom jaw, he must have been in agony.  When the job was finished we were all covered in lice, poor Mark had a two hour drive in front of him to get home whereas the rest of us could throw our cloaths into a washing machine and ourselves into a shower almost immediately!!

Nutmeg is thin and will probably never put on much weight as what teeth he has left are not in good condition but he eats a couple of large hard feeds a day and picks away at whatever else is available in the way of grass, hay and haylage.  He is a happy and very sweet natured pony now.
