Clark’s Little Ark sanctuary in Sanquhar contacted Mossburn in September 2016 to say they had been asked to take in a neutered male goat called Bertie as the neighbouring farm to where he lived had accused him of carrying a virus that would infect their sheep. Alison at Clark’s Little Ark could not accommodate Bertie and therefore asked if there was any chance that Mossburn could take him in. Having checked with our vets they advised that if on inspection Bertie proved to be in good hea

lthy condition there was no risk to our herd to take him in, so Juanita duly set off with Alison to meet Bertie, who is a brown Toggenberg goat. Bertie was found to be in great condition and was running with three other goats – two pygmys who were obviously a pair, and Gertie, an elderly white goat of indeterminate breeding. Having decided that Bertie could certainly come to Mossburn, Juanita asked what would happen to Gertie, and the owners said they hoped she would become friendly with the pygmys. Knowing that was unlikely to happen, Juanita suggested it would be happier for her if she came with Bertie to Mossburn and that is what happened! Both goats are friendly, Gertie is particularly affectionate to humans and Bertie is particularly nosy and likes to be part of anything that might be going on!
